What I'd tell any parent regardless of code: the gate hardware is the part that saves a child, and it's the part most people economize on.
Aluminum pool fencing
Aluminum is what we install most around pools. It's light, it doesn't rust, powder coating handles chlorine and sun without much complaint, and the vertical picket design gives you a barrier with nothing horizontal on the outside for a child to climb.
It's also close to maintenance-free, which matters around a pool where everything else already needs attention.
Vinyl pool fencing
Vinyl gives you more visual privacy than aluminum and comes in a range of colors and panel styles. It resists moisture, doesn't fade quickly and won't crack from pool chemistry.
The trade-off is that a solid vinyl fence means you can't see the pool from the house, which some families want for privacy and others specifically don't want for supervision. Worth deciding deliberately rather than by default.
Glass pool fencing
Glass panel fencing is the option when you don't want to look at a fence at all. It gives an unbroken view of the pool and the yard beyond it while still meeting barrier requirements, and it makes a small yard feel considerably larger.
It's the most expensive of the three and it asks for cleaning, but for a pool that's the centerpiece of the yard nothing else looks like it.
Custom design and installation
Most pool areas end up mixing approaches: glass or aluminum where the view matters, vinyl or wood along a property line where you want privacy from the neighbors, and gates positioned on the paths people actually walk between the house, the pool and the yard.
We lay the barrier out to the shape of the pool deck and the house rather than running a rectangle around everything, get the gates in the right places with the right hardware, and set posts on ground that's usually been disturbed by pool construction and needs more care than undisturbed dirt.

How tall does a pool fence have to be in Tennessee?
Residential pool barriers are commonly required to be at least four feet, and some jurisdictions and insurers ask for more. Because enforcement varies locally and depends on when your pool was permitted, I check the requirements for your specific address before we build rather than quoting you a number that might not apply.
Do pool gates have to self-close and self-latch?
Yes, that's the part codes are most consistent about, and it's the part that actually protects a child. The gate should swing away from the pool, close and latch on its own every time, and have the release high enough that a small child can't operate it. Standard hardware on a pool gate is not acceptable.
Can I use my existing yard fence as the pool barrier?
Sometimes, if it meets the height requirement, has no climbable rails on the outside, no gaps at the bottom, and the gates are brought up to self-closing and self-latching hardware. Often the fence is fine and only the gates need work, which is a small job. I'll look at what you have and tell you.
What holds up best against pool chemicals?
Powder-coated aluminum, comfortably. Vinyl is also very good. Untreated metal and unsealed wood are the two that suffer, because chlorine and constant splash-out are hard on both.
Will a pool fence ruin my back yard?
Not if it's laid out properly. Aluminum picket and glass both keep sightlines open, and running the barrier tight to the pool deck rather than around the whole yard usually leaves the yard feeling open while still meeting the requirement.
